Henleyfield Happenings

2011: January

2010: December - September/October - August - July - June - May - April

January 2011

Well Happy New Year, Everyone!

On January 11, the annual Membership Meeting of HCI was held at the Community Center. In addition to the usual items such as the Treasurer’s Report, committee reports and so forth, we presented our Long Range Plan to the membership.  Proposed improvements to the Community Center and its grounds include a new storage building, a 2nd playground near the Pavilion, and improved parking and landscaping.  As these items are prioritized and scheduled, more details will be released.

We also discussed the possibility of a Green Market in Henleyfield and some of the benefits and challenges that such a market would bring.  Lynn Haspel has been researching Farmer’s Markets in nearby communities for ideas and contacts.  If you would be interested in such a market, whether as a grower, a seller, a customer or a volunteer staffer, please contact Lynn at 601-798-0066.  An effort like this requires a balance of all of these people and a healthy level of participation in order to be successful.

A new Board member, Gail Flint, was elected to the Board of Directors of HCI, and four current Board members were re-elected.

At the subsequent Board meeting on January 17, the officers for 2011 were elected.  They are:  Laura Ousset - President, Jan Bowen – Vice President, Ken Newburger – Treasurer, and Joy Fortenberry – Secretary.  Contact information for all of the Board members can be found on our web site, www.henleyfield.com.

Spring activities under discussion include the Easter Sunrise Service, a “Spring Fling” day with plant sales, food and entertainment, another Health and Wellness Day, and a Community Garage Sale.  As these events are scheduled and details become available, they will be posted on the calendar section of the web site .

HCI SCHOLARSHIP APPPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY MARCH 31, 2011!

This is our first year to award the HENLEYFIELD.COMmunity Scholarship to a graduating high school senior from the Henleyfield area.  This $1000 scholarship is intended to support the student during the first year of his or her continuing education.  The criteria for the scholarship and the scholarship application can be found on our web site.  They are also available from the school counselors at any of the three area high schools. September/October:

In September:

While nothing much else happened in September, it was a great month for the Henleyfield Volunteer Fire Department.  Last Friday, exactly one year after the death of Ben Usinger, long time treasurer of HVFD, his beloved fire company took delivery of a brand new rescue truck.  This truck was built by Deep South Fire Trucks in Seminary, MS, and replaces a 15 year old vehicle whose time had come.  All of the hydraulic rescue tools like the Jaws of Life and hydraulic spreaders were moved from the old truck to the new.  The truck carries two firefighters and will be used whenever a rescue situation arises.  While you can’t see it in this picture, above the equipment bay the lettering reads “In Memory of Mr. Ben – Gone, But Never Forgotten”.  A fitting tribute to New HVFD Fire Trucka man who devoted many years to the promotion of this fire company.

In addition, a $38,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant provided 17 sets of brand new turn-out gear - jackets, pants, boots, gloves and helmets - to protect these men when called to duty.

This brings us to…….the HVFD Fish Fry, which will be held on Saturday, October 9 from 11 to 6pm.  Come on out, have some great catfish for lunch or dinner and help them pay for that shiny, VERY expensive new truck!

In October:

The Fall Festival Planning Committee is busy getting ready for our 4th Annual Fall Festival.  The schedule has been changed somewhat this year.  Heritage Day, our celebration of Henleyfield history and lore, has been moved to October 16, a Saturday.  The hope is that the weather will be a little warmer, and that folks who work will be able to come with their older family members to have lunch and enjoy the tales of Henleyfield as it used to be 60 or 70 years ago.

On Thursday October 21st, we are inviting all 8 candidates for the District 2 Supervisor’s Race to come to the Community Center to answer your questions and present their qualifications for office.  We hope to get good participation from the candidates, so come out and find out who these people really are.  We’ll get started at 7PM.

Saturday October 30 is the Byrd’s Chapel Fall Festival from 10AM to 2PM.  Always fun!

10/04 Hey Folks:

Just a quick update about what’s going on this month…….

October 9 –

Henleyfield Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry from 11am to 6pm.  Come out and eat some good catfish, support our local fire guys.

HAZ-MAT disposal in McNeill in front of the M&M Industries building from 8am – 5pm.  You can bring any sort of hazardous waste such as old batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, regular long fluorescent bulbs, used oil, antifreeze, pesticides, oil based paint and so forth.  Check your shop and shed and get rid of this stuff in the right way.  It’s free, so let’s take advantage of it.

October 16 –

Heritage Day at the Community Center, 10 am – 2pm.  Come and have lunch and hear about what Henleyfield was like in the “good old days”!

October 21 –

“Meet the Candidates”  at the Community Center at 7 pm.  We’ve invited all 8 people running for District 2 Supervisor to come out tell us who they are and what they believe, and answer some serious questions, with time allowed for you to get in your questions as well.   Know who you’re voting for!

And just FYI:

Most county services have been moved to the new municipal building on Goodyear Blvd. just past the hospital.  Driver’s License, auto tags, etc. have been all consolidated in this one location.

HCI is talking about sponsoring a Farmer’s Market at the Community Center starting in the spring of next year.  Are you interested in being a vendor?  Would you buy from such a market?  What would you buy? What could you sell?  Would you volunteer to help?  Please contact Lynn Haspel at 601-798-0066 or Laura Ousset at 601-798-0698 with your ideas, comments and questions.

Don’t forget to check our website, www.henleyfield.com for information about the Fall Festival, entry forms for our 5K/10K Pearl River Ramble Race and application forms for our new scholarship for graduating seniors.  It’s all there and current, so take a look.

Thanks,

August, 2010:

Hi Folks:

Well, it’s still hot, and there still isn’t much going on this month until the weekend of Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th.  That’s when Henleyfield will be the site of a major benefit archery competition organized by Mark Wallace.

Here is what Mark has to say about it:

The event is a 3-D mechanical pop-up target competition. We will also have a long distance shoot, a dot shoot and a kid’s archery corner somewhere on the grounds. We have local, state and national sponsors and will also have vendors set up to sell their goods. Some of the local vendors are a custom knife maker, a custom turkey call maker and a local archer that does flint knapping ( he also happens to be #7 in the world for primitive archery competition). We will set up on Friday and have a night shoot Friday night for local folks and the setup team. The Saturday shoot will be from 9am till.

All the different shoots will take place simultaneously during the day and the finals will be held at 4:30 that evening. We will have food, drinks and music playing all day. We are planning an archery swap meet and lots of other activities. This event is growing daily and we are anticipating around 300 people during the day. We will have novice and champion archers from several states.

Y’all are more than welcome to attend as it is open to the public. All the proceeds raised go to the Ms. Chapter of Wheelin Sportsmen. Wheelin Sportsmen is housed under the National Wild Turkey Federation and is a 501-C3 organization. We provide outdoor opportunities for individuals with disabilities, not just in wheelchairs. I am the state coordinator for Mississippi and you can go to NWTF.org and click on the Wheelin Sportsmen icon and read about what we do.

This sounds like a whole lot of fun, so mark your calendars and plan to participate or just come by to see what’s happening.

If you’ve been past the Community Center recently, you can’t help but notice the flower beds.  The flowers around our big sign, the coleus under the tree, everything looking perky and well tended in spite of the withering heat.  All of this is thanks to the hard work of Warren and Mary Megehee, who are out there at 6 in the morning on a regular basis.

To the Megehees, a big thanks from all of us!

Try to keep cool, everyone,

July 2010:

Well, actually, there is not much happening in July – it’s just too hot!  We do have some announcements, though.

First, HCI is considering offering computer classes if we have enough interest.  These classes will be taught by Yvette Williams, and offered free to the community. There are two levels, Basics and Intermediate.

The Basics hands-on workshop would include turning on the machine, working with the desktop, taskbar, maximizing and minimizing windows, Programs Menu, accessing programs - opening and saving files to My documents, printing files, Internet Explorer Basics (even though Internet is not available), and correctly shutting down the computer.

Intermediate Hands-On Workshop - would include organizing (moving, copying, renaming, deleting ) files/folder , file extensions, the right mouse button, checking and defragmenting the hard drive, Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, User Accounts, Display settings, email - sending attachments.

Now we realize that if you’re getting this email, you may already be a pretty competent user, so please, if you know someone who might be interested in either of these classes, pass this information on.  Ask them to contact Laura Ousset at 601-798-0698 for more information, or you could respond via email of course.

As you may know, at our Annual Meeting in January the Membership approved a Board proposal to establish an annual $1000 scholarship, to be awarded to a graduating high school senior each year.  We have set up the criteria for this award and are in contact with each of the three area high schools.  We would like them to make the application available to their students, and to include the HCI scholarship in their awards presentations.

Click here for scholarship details and the application form. The first award will be made in the Spring of 2011.  We are very excited about this program and feel it will be a real benefit to our community.

The Community Center building and the Pavilion are available at no cost for use by the community on a first-come, first-served basis for parties, family reunions, picnics and so forth.  To reserve a date for these facilities, simply contact any Board member.  HOWEVER, the person reserving the facility MUST sign the HCI User’s Agreement within three days of making the reservation in order for us to hold the date.  These agreement forms and the Community Center Usage Guidelines are available at Fortenberry’s Slaughter House on Hwy 43.

A gentle reminder – if you haven’t renewed your membership this year, please consider doing so.  HCI is a vital part of this community, and we rely heavily on our members and wonderful volunteers to provide some of the services and activities that make this community so special.  Our membership form is available on our website.

Stay safe – keep cool – have a great July!

June 2010:

Hi Folks!

Our first-ever Community Yard Sale will be held on June 12. It is free to our community, you set the prices, you pocket the proceeds.  Call Lisa McCammon if you have any questions. It should be a lot of fun.

On the last weekend of the month, the Pearl River County chapter of the American Radio Relay League will hold their annual Field Day at the Community Center. These are the ham radio folks who kept communications going for weeks after The Storm when nobody else was talking to anybody.  They will be out there for 24 hours starting on Saturday the 26th at 1:00pm. Come out and see what ham radio is like today.
